Synopsis: Theatres are the spaces where people go for entertainment. Some come for experience, while some come to transfer themselves into the world that cinema creates. Single-screen theatres were the most popular spaces when this art of moving images came to life. Now, with the advent of multiplexes and OTT platforms, single screens are on the verge of dying. People’s choice of experiencing cinema now has resulted in a drastic decline in the development of these spaces.
Ashok Cinema is one of the oldest single-screen theatres in Ahmedabad. Built-in 1939, it was earlier used by drama companies for plays. Later in 1948, it was turned into a cinema theatre. Although the theatre is running in losses, dependency on their earnings and life is making them run it.
The documentary talks about this particular space, its age-old nature, the lives of the staff, and the kind of audience that now keeps it going.
